US undergrad thinking about med school in Italy

Discussion

Hey everyone! I’m a 19-year-old dual French/U.S. citizen currently in undergrad in the U.S., and I’ve been seriously considering medical school in Italy. I have a solid GPA, but I’m mainly drawn to Italy because of the lower cost and the chance to live abroad.

I only recently decided to pursue medicine, so I’d likely need to take at least a gap year to get clinical experience and shadowing. I know a lot of people say going abroad isn’t worth it because it can be hard to come back to the U.S. for residency, but I’m mostly interested in family medicine or psychiatry, which I know are less competitive. I also wouldn’t be totally opposed to staying and practicing in the EU.

If anyone has experience with Italian med schools, coming back to the U.S. as an IMG, or has an opinion at all. I’d really appreciate any advice
