Loan for Living Expenses

I'm going to preface that I receive financial aid, and have already received my refund for this semester. However, I cannot afford to live, let alone pay for my books and things I need. I live off campus and commute with a friend to the other side of town, where the campus is. I have heard you can get student loans for living, but I'm not sure how to go about doing so. For every other semester, I have received a veteran benefit that allows me to make ends meet. This semester, since I had to transfer to a new institution, I had to resubmit all my information and admittedly did it very late; this is my fault, but I wasn't aware until December that I had to do so, which is why I did it late. They told me the estimated time to start receiving the benefit again is a few months, but obviously, I need to pay bills and buy books in the meantime. I have a scheduled appointment to talk to my school's financial aid office, but I want to be prepared for what the process is, since I have never done this before. I am also wondering if I would still be able to receive a loan for this semester since my refund and tuition already passed.
