I’m confused about the school year as someone who wants to become a foreign exchange student.

How would it work if I was an exchange student? I looked it up and it said school ends in late March and starts early April, how would it work since I’m American and school ends in early July for me, does that mean if I went to High school in Japan for a full year, I’d come to school a little later than the rest of the students?
