Learning more advanced vocabulary as a heritage speaker

Vocabulary

Does anyone have any guides/tips on how to start learning vocab that isn’t necessarily everyday use? Specifically listening/speaking? I have been traveling in China recently with a group of friends where I am the best at Chinese, and this is my first time being in China without my parents, both of whom have Chinese as their first language.

I’ve known that my reading ability is pretty poor now, but what I hadn’t realized is the major gaps in vocab that I have. I would say I sound like a native with regards to things like pronunciation and flow so people talk to me like I’m native, but then they throw in words that are really not too advanced that I just don’t know at all.

For example, today I had a flight out of Shanghai but we went to the wrong airport. I went to the service counter and told her that and asked to change the flight, but when she asked for ID (鉴别), I had no idea what she was asking for at all. I asked her what that was and she just repeated it, and it wasn’t until she was like “像护照” that I understood what she was asking.

And I guess ID *is* a very everyday word, so this isn’t even a good example and I just have strange gaps in my vocab. Any tips would be great
