Sooo playing Gamecube-games in widescreen is actually difficult?

Hey,

I was looking up some Youtube-videos, and it seems you can't just change the render resolution to 1080p, it will still show a 4:3 image or stretch it. Is this correct or am I missing something? I would have liked to play Gamecube-games in 16:9 without much hassle nor any stretching.
