AITAH for removing inactive members from a church choir WhatsApp group?
I (female 28) am the leader in my church choir, and I’m looking for outside perspective because this situation has become emotionally exhausting.
Our choir used to be very close-knit and met weekly (context this group does not include all the choir members but just a few of us that are very exclusive). Over time, some unhealthy dynamics developed, particularly involving one male member who is very hot-headed and reactive. Over the years, several female members have left due to his behaviour (being physically touchy, giving mixed signals, and reacting angrily when challenged). A female member who is close to him consistently takes his side and often escalates conflicts rather than calming them.
Recently, a sensitive situation arose involving a church member with mental health challenges. To protect the person’s dignity and prevent gossip, I explained the situation briefly in our choir WhatsApp group and temporarily removed inactive members so the explanation wouldn’t spread unnecessarily. I made it clear that anyone was welcome to rejoin at any time.
One inactive member (context he only participated 4 times in a year) reacted very angrily to being removed, accused me of embarrassing him, and sent rude messages. His brother became involved, the female member sided with them, and the situation escalated quickly. Sides were taken, friendships were strained, and the conflict grew far beyond the original issue.
At this point, I and the remaining choir members want to move on. However, the emotional impact has lingered. There are still tensions and reminders of the conflict, including repeated messages on other social media platforms after being blocked on WhatsApp and long posts indirectly referencing the situation. The situation has also been reframed in a way that influenced uninvolved members to take their side and leave the choir, making it difficult for the group to fully settle and move forward.
I’ve decided not to involve parents or church elders, as I feel that would escalate things further. Instead, I’m focusing on creating emotional boundaries and maintaining a peaceful environment for those who want to continue in the choir.
I'm super confused...
