Is it too early to go long distance?

I (30F) have been dating a guy (32M) for about two months, and it’s been one of those slow-burn connections that gradually turned into something really meaningful. Early on, I wasn’t sure if I felt a “spark,” but with time, I realized he embodies so many qualities I value in a longterm partner: caring, thoughtful, funny, emotionally patient, intelligent, and kind. We align strongly on core values (family, work ethic, politics, and general worldview) and I’ve started to feel genuinely invested in where this could go.

Before any major changes came up, I had already introduced the topic of long distance, since I’m likely relocating for work in the next few months. That move would place us about 125 miles apart, which felt manageable. He was open to discussing that possibility.

However, last week he told me his job gave him an ultimatum: relocate across the country within two weeks or leave his position. He made the decision to move which will now separate us by over 2,000 miles.

We’ve only been dating for two months, but we’ve both shown intentionality and emotional openness. I’m now trying to figure out how realistic it is to pursue a long-distance relationship this early, especially one involving such a significant distance and life transition.

My questions:

  1. Is two months too early to seriously consider committing to a long distance relationship, especially one that spans across the country?

  2. For those who’ve successfully navigated early stage long distance relationships, what conversations are essential before making that decision?

  3. What boundaries, expectations, or timelines helped your relationship feel secure rather than ambiguous?

  4. When is the right time to initiate this conversation, given that he may be moving in about two weeks?

I’m not looking for fairytale thinking, but I also don’t want to walk away from something with real potential out of fear. Any grounded advice would be really appreciated.
