Why do I get so much more attention from older Middle Eastern men than men my own age in Scotland?
Hi, this might be a bit of a strange question, but I’m genuinely curious if there’s a cultural or social explanation for this.
I’m a 22F from Scotland, and I get relatively little attention from men my own age here. However, I very frequently get attention from slightly older men (roughly 30–40+, sometimes older), and who are exclusively Arabic/Middle Eastern.
I’ve had men approach me in public to tell me they think I’m beautiful, and I’m very often asked where I’m “really” from. A lot of people don’t seem to believe I’m Scottish and instead assume I’m Eastern European. I’ve been asked multiple times if I’m from very specific countries like Estonia or Latvia, which I find odd as I don’t get why they are being so specific.
At work, I’ve had customers linger much longer than necessary just to talk to me, while barely acknowledging my colleagues. One man told me I was the most beautiful person he’d ever seen, and accused me jokingly of having a fake name and being a spy as he didn’t believe I was Scottish. Another repeatedly came back to speak to me specifically, despite other staff being closer or available and was being a little flirty. There is another guy who’s a regular, and every time I’m working he stays and chats to me for about 20 minutes, while never really acknowledging my colleagues and doesn’t stay and chat if I’m not there.
I recently went on holiday to Turkey with my family, and by the end of the week three members of the waiting staff asked for my Instagram. Two of them later messaged saying they wanted to take me out but didn’t feel comfortable asking while I was with my family. One of them also assumed I was 19, which surprised me. There was also a much older barman (50s/60s) who repeatedly asked if I liked Turkish men and kept speaking to me in Rus, even after I told him multiple times that I’m not from Rus and don’t speak the language.
These are just some of many many incidents over the past couple years.
For context, I’m fairly tall for a Scottish woman (around 5’9–5’10), relatively slim, pale, with blue/green eyes and brown hair. I’d say I have fairly soft features and I consider myself averagely pretty.
I’m not trying to humblebrag or complain, I’m genuinely just confused about why this keeps happening and why it seems so specific to older Middle Eastern men rather than men my own age or from my own country. Is this a cultural thing, a beauty standard thing, or just coincidence?
