Driver knocked me off and drove away, feeling pretty shaken

Advice

I’m a fairly new rider. I’m 45 years old and, much to my own embarrassment, I never passed my driving test when I was younger.

Last September I decided to go for my CBT, passed it, and I’ve completely fallen in love with riding. I try to get out on my bike as often as I can, it’s become something I genuinely look forward to.

Yesterday I had my first accident.

A driver was pulling out from the central reservation on a large road and, despite clearly seeing me, drove straight into the side of me. They hit me with the front left-hand side of their car. Thankfully I managed to keep the bike upright and pull over safely, but it could have been far worse.

What’s really shaken me is that the driver didn’t stop. It was broad daylight, they must have known they’d hit me, but they just carried on and drove away.

The driver behind me stopped immediately to check I was okay and reassured me that I wasn’t at fault, which I really appreciated.

The damage is minor my, right brake lever is slightly bent, and apart from a sore leg I’m thankfully alright.

My main issue now is the anxiety. I feel nervous about getting back out on the bike, and I’m worried this has taken the edge off the enthusiasm I’ve had since starting.

I’m hoping more experienced riders here can tell me this is normal after your first spill, and that with a bit of time and confidence-building I’ll be back out enjoying it again soon.
