[Tool] ipv6ddns: Network-wide DDNS by MAC address

DNS Tools

One of the main quality of life improvements when you selfhost is using proper DNS names instead of memorizing IP addresses.

However keeping those records in sync across a whole lab is often a manual, error prone mess. While most people think of DDNS only for their WAN connection, internal dynamic DNS is a game changer especially if you are dipping your toes into IPv6.

I created ipv6ddns, an open-source, centralized orchestrator that maps your DNS names to MAC addresses.

The "Why":

  • Dynamic IPv6 Prefixes: If your ISP rotates your prefix, this tracks the change and updates all your internal host records (AAAA) at once.
  • Static IPs & IPv4: Even if your network is static, this acts as your network's "Source of Truth." No more multiple manual DNS edits when you spin up a new container, migrate a VM, or a host gets a new DHCP lease. While not the focus, it supports IPv4 (A records) too.
  • Agentless & Compatible: You don't need to install update scripts on the target devices. This works for devices without explicit DDNS support: IP cameras, IoT sensors, or locked-down appliances.

How it works: The tool monitors the network to find the current IP for a specific MAC address. It then pushes that IP to your provider (Local DNS, Cloudflare, AWS, DuckDNS, etc) or updates your local router static DNS entries.

It’s a "set and forget" way to ensure camera.lab.local always resolves, regardless of network changes. Feedback is welcome!
