Low fodmap reintroduction tricky with endo symptoms, anyone else?
I started the low FODMAP diet as a final gastro-related option prior to getting my excision in April. It was going really well (albeit annoying) and after 4-5 days of elimination I was at my lowest bloat in months. I had one small bloat after having a couple soda water mocktails, but it went away overnight and I was so relieved. Elimination happened during my luteal and I was just amazed at how good I was feeling.
My period came at the same time as my first re-intro, which was fructose (I trialed orange juice). Day 1 was confusing because I had digestive symptoms (no tummy bloat, just some swelling in my very lower abdomen), but I kept testing for a few days and eventually tried pure fructose (in the form of a running gel) and it passed. I chalked up the first day of symptoms to my period and fructose has been fine since. I tried wheat next during my follicular and it failed. I stopped after 2 days and didn't make it to the big day 3 dose. I waited 3 days for the bloat to subside before trying the next one, lactose.
The morning of the first lactose test, I woke up bloated but with no other symptoms so decided to persist. I was a few days from ovulation and my bloating is always at its vety worst then. I'm now on day 4 of trialing lactose, and I'm in my fertile window and just so bloated. I wake up bloated and go to bed bloated. It's classic ovulation bloat for me with swelling that starts lower down and extends upwards and is hard to the touch, except it isn't expanding all the way up towards my ribs like it has at times in the past. It is *signficantly* less than it used to be, but still very notable compared to what was going on when I was in full elimination. I'm having mild to no symptoms otherwise, but the bloat persists. I did have some rough symptoms the day of the highest lactose dose, but they went away relatively quickly.
I am desperate to get more foods back in my diet, but I'm feeling so discouraged by how hard it is to tell what is a fodmap-related symptom and what is endo-related. I know they can be very closely tied, but when I'm already so bloated during ovulation, how can I rule a food in/out? Maybe the answer is that I have to only introduce foods during my luteal and menstrual and the first 2 days of follicular when bloat is already low?
Looking for any thoughts at all on this! I can manage just fine at home on the fully restrictive elimination diet, but it's so hard when eating out and I want that part of life to be *more* normal. I have a big wrek of social plans 3 wks from now, and I'd love to have more in my rotation (namely confirmation of lactose and garlic).
I'm also curious if low fodmap was less necessary for folks post-excision? I know excision isn't a one-time cure-all, but I'd love to get the food part of my life back (I am a huge foodie).
Many thanks in advance for any thoughts!!
