AITAH for skipping my sister’s baby shower… after I found out the baby is legally mine (and I’m the “dad” on paper)?

I (28F) have a sister, “Maya” (31F), who has always been the Main Character in our family. If there’s a wedding, she’s “basically the bride.” If there’s a funeral, she’s “the one who really lost someone.” You get it.

About a year ago, Maya and her husband “Drew” (33M) started talking about having a baby, but they were vague about details. They’d say stuff like “It’s complicated” and “There’s paperwork” and “Don’t judge us,” which… okay, fine. None of my business.

Then about four months ago, Maya calls me crying. She says their fertility clinic messed up some insurance coding, and now they’re stuck in a “bureaucratic loop.” She asks if I can come with her to the clinic because she “can’t do it alone” and needs “someone calm.”

I go, because I’m her sister and I’m not a monster.

At the clinic, a coordinator comes out with a clipboard and says, “We just need one additional signature from you.” I’m like, “From me?” And Maya jumps in fast, like FAST, saying it’s just a form confirming I’m her emergency contact and that I can pick up medication if she’s too nauseous.

The coordinator says, “Right, and acknowledging intended parent status.”
Maya laughs loudly and goes, “LOL, yes, it’s just how they word everything.”

I should’ve stopped right there. I didn’t. I signed. I barely read it because:

  1. I was in a sterile hallway with people rushing
  2. Maya was crying and doing the whole “please please please” thing
  3. The coordinator was standing there like if I didn’t sign, someone’s eggs would explode

After that, everything seemed normal. Maya got pregnant. Everyone celebrated. She started planning a baby shower that’s basically the Met Gala for unborn children. My mom was thrilled. Drew was acting weirdly formal around me, but I assumed he was just being a new-dad freak.

Fast forward to two weeks ago.

I get a call from a number I don’t recognize. It’s the clinic.

They say, “Hi, we’re confirming your delivery preferences and legal documentation for the birth.”

I’m like, “Uh… I’m not giving birth. My sister is.”

There’s a pause. Then the woman says, slowly, like she’s reading a file:
“According to our records, you are listed as the intended parent. You’ll need to be present to sign final parentage paperwork or provide a notarized waiver.”

I actually laughed because it sounded insane. I said, “No, I’m the aunt.”

She goes, “You’re listed as Parent 1.”

I said, “Parent… one.”

She said, “Yes. And the other intended parent is… Maya.”

At this point I’m sweating. I ask her to email me whatever she’s looking at.

She sends it.

It’s the form I signed.

And the “intended parent” section is not fine print. It’s a whole paragraph. It basically says I’m agreeing to be the legal parent of any child resulting from the procedure, and that Maya is acting as the gestational carrier.

A GESTATIONAL CARRIER.

My sister filed herself as a surrogate. For me.

I call Maya immediately. She doesn’t answer. I call Drew. He answers on the second ring like he’s been waiting for this.

I say, “Why am I Parent 1 on your baby paperwork?”

Drew goes, very calmly, “We were going to explain.”

I say, “EXPLAIN WHAT?”

He says, “It was the only way to protect the baby.”

And then he drops this absolute nuclear sentence:

“My father’s trust requires the first grandchild be legally tied to a direct heir. If not, the money goes to his second family.”

I did not know Drew’s dad had a trust. I did not know Drew’s dad had a second family. I did not know any of these words were about to be my problem.

Apparently Drew’s father is extremely rich and extremely awful. The trust has a clause that the “first grandchild” must be born to a “recognized heir” under a specific legal structure. Drew is not the recognized heir.

Why?

Because Drew was adopted.

(Yes, I also screamed.)

So to make the baby count for the trust, the baby has to be legally connected to a “recognized heir.” Maya isn’t. Drew isn’t (for trust purposes). But I am—because I was briefly, accidentally, legally adopted by Drew’s father.

I know how that sounds. I didn’t even remember this happening because it was framed as a “guardian paperwork thing” years ago when I was 18 and living with them for a few months after my parents had a messy situation. Drew’s dad was “helping” and apparently did some legal maneuvering to claim me as a dependent/ward/adoptee for tax/trust reasons. Everyone treated it like it was nothing.

So basically: in the trust’s eyes, I’m the “heir-adjacent” loophole person.

And Maya and Drew used that loophole—without telling me—to make their baby “qualify.”

I told Drew, “So you tricked me into being the legal parent of your kid for money.”

He said, “Not tricked. It was temporary. Just until the birth. Then we’d fix it.”

Fix it HOW? With what magical wand? The Baby Reassigner 3000?

I finally get Maya on the phone and she starts sobbing and saying I’m “ruining everything” and that I was “supposed to be happy for her” and that “it doesn’t even mean anything, it’s just paperwork.”

I said, “Paperwork is literally how laws work.”

She says, “You don’t understand the pressure. If we don’t do this, the trust goes to the other family and his dad wins.”

I said, “So… to stop his dad from winning, you made me legally responsible for a newborn.”

She says, “You’re my sister. You were always going to be in the baby’s life!”

Which is such a wild sentence to say to someone you just secretly drafted into parenthood.

I told her I’m not going to the baby shower. I said I’m not celebrating a situation where I might be on the hook for child support if they get divorced, or where some legal mess could happen and I’d be the one dragged into court.

My mom is furious at me. She says I’m “punishing Maya over a technicality” and that I’m “making it all about myself.”

Maya is telling everyone I’m skipping because I’m jealous and “hate her happiness.” Drew texted me, “Please don’t do this right now. We’re so close.”

And here’s the part where I started feeling slightly insane:

Yesterday, I got an email from a lawyer I’ve never met. The subject line was:
“CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR UPCOMING CHILD.”

Attached was a document called Parental Responsibility Acknowledgment.

I haven’t signed anything else. I haven’t replied. I feel like if I breathe wrong I’ll end up on a birth certificate.

So… AITA for skipping the baby shower and refusing to play along until they undo whatever the hell they did?

EDIT: For people asking—no, I did not receive any money. No one offered. They keep saying it’s “just to unlock the trust” and then they’ll “take care of me,” which sounds like something said right before a crime happens.

EDIT 2: Yes, I’m getting my own lawyer. Please stop DMing me “just manifest a restraining order.” I AM TRYING.

EDIT 3: Maya just texted me a picture of the baby shower invitations. They say:
“A LITTLE BUNDLE IS ON THE WAY — HONORING MOM + DAD.”
The “Dad” line is blank. I hate it here.

AITA?
