Seeking advice on building a DIY eGPU
Hello wise people,
I have decided to jump into the eGPU rabbit hole, but I am not a fan of the huge eGPU enclosures on the market. The best one I could find is the GPD G1: perfect size and power for what I'd like BUT it's AMD.
Now, I love AMD but, saddly, I need NIVIDIA's cuda both for personal and work projects. Hence the quest.
Some other redditters who have done it
One seems ideal. Seems to be a PCIex4 to M.2 into an nvme enclosure to USB4. I kind of love the Rube Goldberg-eske nature of it, but I am unsure how they are powering the card. I am new to this but AFAIK you have to provide power through the 6/8-pin connector? And there seems to be a bunch of stuff just loose on the desk which may or may not be part of the build.
Two is great too, but there is way less information. Seems to be a PCIe x4 to M.2 to oculink. With power from a battery? though unclear once again on the connection interface.
My plan so far is to get either a 4060 or 5060, limited to 90-100W, with as small a volume as possible.
Parts I am considering:
- Simplest: generic egpu dock with a 12V 10A 5.5mm power supply. Issues: the eGPU dock seems a bit too pricey and I am not entirely sure if the 5.5mm jack can power the graphics card through the PCI slot. Again, I am not very knowledgeable on this.
- Smallest: follow on the steps of One and Two and go PCIe x4 into nvme into usb4, though I am not entirely sure how to power the card in that case, and the price difference doesn't seem that big (assuming a reputable nvme to usb4 or thunderbolt enclosure)
Is there any advice the wise people of reddit could give? I am very open to suggestions, critiques and insults.
