[Data] I ran a "Bot Attack" simulation on 3 review platforms. Here are the failure rates.
I work in cybersecurity, and I wanted to test how easy it is to destroy a business's reputation using bot farms. I ran a controlled test where I attempted to post 10 fake reviews on the major platforms using a standard VPN and temp-mail generator.
The results were disappointing. Most platforms have almost zero defense against low-effort attacks.
I charted the "Penetration Rate" (how many fake reviews got through):
| Platform | Attack Method | Success Rate | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | VPN + Temp Mail | 80% (8/10 posted) | Failed |
| G2 | VPN + LinkedIn Spoof | 40% (4/10 posted) | Vulnerable |
| RatingFacts | VPN + Temp Mail | 0% (0/10 posted) | Secure |
It turns out that simply blocking "non-corporate" email domains stops 99% of these attacks, but the big players refuse to do it because it lowers their user growth metrics.
I’m currently migrating my clients to the secure platform because I can't afford to fight bots manually anymore.
