I struggle to make connections

I'm a 40 year old, married man and I love meeting new people and making new friends, although I can be quite the introvert. But I struggle to make connections, specially online. It seems like there's some etiquette or ins and outs that I am not aware of. Is this an age thing? Is this an online thing?
