Water capacity : water bladder + filter bottle, bad idea?
Hi everyone,
I’m preparing a 13-day trek on the GR20, and I’m currently thinking a lot about water management, which is probably one of the most critical points on this trail.
Unfortunately, there are several long and difficult stages where there are no water sources between refuges. In many cases, you can only refill at the start of the stage and at the end, with nothing in between, and the environment is quite dry and exposed.
On top of that, I drink a lot of water and sweat a lot, so I know I need to carry a solid amount with me.
My current idea is:
- 2L hydration bladder (something like the Osprey Hydraulics™ 2L)
- Katadyn BeFree AC 1L filter bottle
This setup would give me:
- ~3L carrying capacity
- An emergency filtration option if I ever find water on the way
- Compatibility with my Osprey Aether 55L backpack
I know hydration bladders are a controversial topic 😅 — some people love them, others hate them — so I’m wondering:
Is this a stupid idea or a reasonable setup for this kind of trek?
My main concern is durability. I often hear about:
- Bladders getting small punctures
- Filter bottles leaking or breaking It feels like accidents happen quite frequently, and on a trail like the GR20, that would be a real problem.
I’d really appreciate:
- Your opinions on bladder vs bottles for long, dry stages
- Real-world experience if you’ve done the GR20 or similar treks
- Any alternative lightweight setups
I’m aiming to keep things as light as possible, so rigid bottles are not my first choice unless they really make sense reliability-wise.
Thanks a lot for your feedback and experience 🙏
