Is Shopify a good start for a webshop?

I’m setting up a webstore for my preorder business, but I’m a bit unsure if I should pay for shopify. I have seen a lot of mixed reviews about it, and my fear is that the fees and taxes will catch up to me. Would any of you have some advice on this or alternatives I can use?
