How to create videos from photos (beginner friendly tips)

Last week I finally made a photo video my friends actually watched (instead of politely liking and disappearing), so here’s what worked for me if you’re searching how to create videos from photos and you’re a total beginner.

First thing: you’ll want a video editor for this. Not because you need professional stuff, but because you need the basics (timing, music, text). I usually use Movavi Video Editor because it’s simple, but honestly iMovie (Mac), CapCut, and even Clipchamp can get you there too.

What I do now:

I don’t start in the editor, I start by picking the photos and kinda making a mental outline (like where and in which order each photo should go). I pick 20–40 max, and I try to keep only one version of the same moment but slightly different angles.

Then I drop them into the editor and do ONE important thing: I make most photos shorter than I think they should be. The default length is almost always too slow and it instantly looks like a template.

After that I add music early. Not at the end. Music basically tells you where to cut, where to speed up, and where the ending should be.

Little things that make it look 10x better:

Don’t use 12 different transitions. Pick one simple transition (or none) and stick to it. The “wow” part should be your photos, not the transition pack fighting for attention.

Add a tiny bit of movement if your editor has it (slow zoom in/out) because photos with zero motion can feel stiff (keep it subtle tho). Constant spins and flips make it look amateurish and distract from the pics a lot.

I’d say that text is best in small doses. One intro line like “Rome, October” and maybe a couple quick captions if something needs context. If you caption every photo, people stop looking at the photo.

If your photos are a mix of vertical + horizontal, don’t stretch them to fill the screen. That’s when people look like they got pulled sideways. Use a blurred background / background fill instead (most editors have a quick option for this). It’s the easiest workaround that instantly makes it look normal.

Beginner problems I hit and fixes:

If some photos won’t import: it’s usually the iPhone photo format being annoying. The quick fix is to export/share them as regular JPGs first (then everything behaves).

If the video feels boring: cut it down by like 30% and keep only the best photos. This sounds rude, but trust me, it works every time.

If it feels off beat, don’t overthink it. Just change photos when the music clearly changes (chorus / beat drop / big drum).

That’s basically it. I'm not saying this is the only way, but it’s the first time my “photo video” didn’t feel weird or boring.

If you’ve got more tips or tricks that can save a video from photos, let me know in the comments, I’m always happy to try smth new.

TL;DR: pick fewer photos, make them shorter than the default, add music early, don’t spam transitions, add a little gentle zoom, don’t stretch vertical photos, and keep text minimal.
