Islam is distinct enough that we can’t force it into categories like religion, legal system, civilization, culture it overlaps with these but is not reducible to any of them so first we must understand Islam through its own internal structure.

A thing can be persian, greek onfluenced, indian, philosophical, political at the same time being islamic doesn’t require being purely religious he gives examples like sikh wrestlers, hindu courtiers, maimonides islamic identity does not erase other identities.

Islam is not simply whatever muslims claim and it’s not that every action a muslim does automatically becomes Islam instead when muslims speak, think, create, argue, or act those moments should be treated as places where their being muslim is being expressed they are inside the conversation not the owners of it.Muslim identity gives you a position in the tradition
but Islam is larger than any group of Muslims.

Sharia rules, five Pillars is one part but there is also philosophy, mysticism, metaphysics, poetry, symbolic thought to define Islam only through law is historically false because muslims also treated these fields as Islamic.

Modern muslims interpret Islam through lteralism, legalism, simplification premodern muslims accepted, contradictions, metaphor, symbolic layers, multiple truths this makes modern people unable to recognize older complexity as islamic.

Islam includes love, mysticism, art, poetry but also
political power, struggle, violence islam historically contained the full spectrum of human action under divine meaning.

Later philosophy/Sufism are not corruptions they unfold built in potential.

Islam is a discursive universe a meaning system
a civilizational process not just a creed, a law code, a ritual system.

Islamic refers to a way of producing meaning not the religious identity of the person even non muslims can produce acts or works that are Islamic if they engage meaningfully with the Con-Text or if Muslims later engage with their work meaningfully.
