What to do for uni, when i have no direction but need to do something.
Hello, i am a university student at Deakin in Victoria and i honestly feel like giving up on it. The reason isn’t due to struggle with the work itself, or the uni (although i am autistic and anxiety ridden so these are difficult) but because i have no idea what im doing or why im doing it. I have no drive for the course im doing, i dont have any career goal and ive spent so much time agonising over it and decision making that every time the thought of my future comes up i get immediately anxious and panicked. I have never known what i wanted to do, i have interests in some things (video games, theatre, art and also liked science in school) and ive always worked so hard that i was good at every subject i did (mostly out of the fear that i needed every option for when i finally figured out what i liked). I took a whole gap year to figure out what to do for uni and only developed chronic stomach pain from the stress. I never figured it out and only started i degree because i felt i needed to do SOMETHING, so last year i started a bachelor of arts, doing subjects in politics, design, sociology, media etc. But now it’s year 2 beginning and i still don’t know what to narrow down on. My friends are encouraging me to try theatre because it’s something i’m passionate about but i’m not near experienced enough as my anxiety held me back when i was younger and i only recently gave it my all and tried it out. At this point i feel kind of numb picking subjects now the deadline is so close because it’s always made me freak out and i’m honestly exhausted thinking about it.
I don’t know whether to drop out because i’ll be wasting my time on a degree i’m not sure on, but risk sitting still for the rest of my life OR just choosing SOMETHING to get moving even if it’s useless later and i regret it.
I understand no one can tell me the answer, as this is something i ultimately have to figure out on my own. However, i thought id post something in case anyone has had a similar experience or any advice they feel works for my situation. Thank-you.
