Trying to understand the karma system?

This account is really old but I’ve never really used it to post. Now I need to post in some subreddits but my karma isn’t high enough but I can’t seem to find anywhere that says how much is needed to actually be allowed to post? Is there a way to check how much karma needed for each subreddit? Is there a general agreed upon amount across Reddit?
