Swifties: What are your honest opinions on Taylor's silence?
*Submitted this to another subreddit, but I'm not sure it will be posted, so trying here too.*
I know this isn't a "fun" topic of conversation, but I do believe it's an important one.
I’m trying to understand how Swifties are feeling about Taylor's political silence right now, especially with everything happening in the U.S. lately. There's a LOT to choose from, but an unchecked federal agency occupying states to abduct **perceived** illegal immigrants and **execute** American citizens who are trying to protest their actions is a level of barbarism I don't think we've seen as a country before, domestically, that is. These are scary times for everyone here.
**As a disclaimer, this isn’t coming from a place of hostility. If anything, it’s coming from a place of confusion.**
Over the past decade, Taylor made a very public shift into political engagement. She spoke out against Donald Trump, endorsed Democratic candidates, and **talked openly about feeling a responsibility to use her voice.** This created a real expectation that she would continue speaking up when things got intense. And right now, things are more intense than ever before and that intensity is only climbing, which brings me to the question: *What is she waiting for?*
As I mentioned, we’re watching immigration enforcement escalate in ways that are terrifying for a lot of people. We’re watching billionaires shape policy and public life in ways that feel increasingly disconnected from the needs of everyday citizens. The political climate feels heavy, and a lot of people are scared. In that context, Taylor’s silence "hits differently."
I can't say for certain when I began noticing her shift to silence, but I think
the moment that really reignited this conversation was when the White House used her music in TikToks about immigration enforcement. Sabrina Carpenter publicly criticized the administration for it, but Taylor didn’t say anything. That contrast made a lot of people feel like her silence might be strategic; like she’s choosing not to risk alienating parts of her fanbase or her global brand. Some reporting has even suggested that she’s intentionally avoiding political statements and channeling everything into her art instead. Critics argue that this feels like brand protection at a time when many people believe moral clarity is necessary.
I’m not saying she’s obligated to be an activist. But she’s not just a teen pop star anymore. She's an adult in her late 30s who is one of the most influential cultural figures on the planet. Her voice carries weight. Her silence does too.
So I’m genuinely curious how Swifties are processing this. Not in a “drag her” way, but in a real, honest way:
- Do you feel disappointed, or do you think she’s handling this the right way?
- Do you think she has a responsibility to speak up, given her past statements?
- Do you see her silence as strategic, protective, or something else?
- How do you reconcile loving her with feeling uneasy about this moment?
I’m not looking for a fight. I’m looking for genuine perspectives from people who care about her as an artist and role model. I want to understand how people in the fandom are thinking about this, because right now, I’m torn between admiration for her artistry and confusion about her silence.
