Is 2026 the new 2016 for fashion, or are we just consuming more than ever?

Everyone keeps saying 2026 is the new 2016. But let’s be real. Back in 2016 we didn’t consume the way we do now. We followed fashion, sure, but we weren’t drowning in cheap nylon pieces that are bad for both our skin and the planet.

To be honest, I was a fast fashion victim too for a long time. Then I slowly switched to a capsule wardrobe mindset. In just three years, I saved an unbelievable amount of money. Enough to finally do the Europe trip I had been putting off forever. And it was way more eco friendly. After these three years, I can confidently say I’ve figured this out.

What you need to do is actually pretty simple.

  1. Start with thrift stores. Look for clean, good quality pieces. Trust me, once you get the hang of it, they feel like heaven.
  2. Since most thrifted items are second hand, care labels are often missing or unreadable. This is where things get tricky. I use a tool for this that helps a lot. I’ll mention it below.
  3. Donate, upcycle, or resell the clothes you already own but never use. Local resale apps are great for this. I’ve tried all of them. Whatever you do, don’t throw clothes away.
  4. Keep your wardrobe small but intentional. Focus on basics. Choose clothes and shoes made from durable materials, and actually follow the care instructions. This part matters more than people think. I personally discovered an app called ''Fabric Identifier'' while searching on my own, and it’s been genuinely helpful for figuring out how to wash and care for pieces properly.

When you do this, your clothes last longer, you spend less, and you stop feeding the consumption madness. It’s better for your wallet and the environment. And honestly, it feels really freeing.
