Hoop in old cartilage piercing

Troubleshooting/question existing piercing

Recently found that with a little push the cartilage piercing I have had no jewelry in since 2010, was still open. Tried a few different styles before switching to a hoop about a week and half ago.

Hoop is surgical steel, clicker style. It was a bit difficult to get in, I think the hole had adjusted to a the smaller size of the previous flat back jewelry. A little pain then but no blood or pus or anything. Was using antibacterial soap and water for a while, just switched to saline spray yesterday.

Questions are - is it normal that the piercing is still really really sore? It’s sore if I accidentally bump it and often is tender just sitting there. How long should I expect the soreness as the site adjusts to the shape of the hoop? At what point do I decide that either the hoop doesnt work or that the piercing itself is too sensitive? There has never been any blood or pus or bumps. It occasionally feels warm. I do not sleep on it. Any guidance is helpful and let me know if pics are necessary
