Homeschool or Conservative Private School?
I (26F) was homeschooled and did not sit in a traditional classroom until my junior year of college. My husband (28M) went to a very conservative Christian private school then went to the attached university for college, where we met. We now have preschool aged children who are in a lovely half-day preschool. My son has adhd and has been a classroom problem for the past couple years, but my daughter is doing well.
We currently only have the money to do public kindergarten, but my husband doesn’t want that to be our long-term education plan. He wants the kids to attend the same private school he did. But that scares me. His sisters don’t have same positive view of the school that he does and that scares me for my daughter. And I don’t want my son turning out to be the hyper conservative, women-blaming, militant Christian nationalist stereotype.
I think I would rather homeschool (which is more acceptable to my husband than public school). My homeschool experience wasn’t great. I used the Abeka dvd program, which involved watching a class happen on screen for hours without actually getting to participate with a class. It filled me with jealousy for all the kids who got to spend time with peers. My mom, who was in charge of our homeschool program, regularly said “I’m just not a teacher.” She would go months without grading our work and blame us for falling behind. Fortunately, since she just bought a package curriculum that was intended originally for a Christian school, I managed to get as complete an education as you would get in a private school that intentionally leaves out parts of science and history, and I was well prepared for university for the most part. The lack of social interaction really got to me, though. Our only extracurricular was piano lessons. I only saw people my age when I was involved in a church youth group, and that was heavily supervised by my “chaperone” parents. My adjustment in college was learning how to interact with peers not how to complete school assignments. I swore up and down that I would never homeschool my children.
Now I am reconsidering that decision. Faced with the conservative Christian school or homeschool, I’m not sure which to advocate for. To me homeschooling should never be used to intentionally isolate kids. I would want to put my kids in forest school, music and drama, and sports or other athletics like rock climbing. I would want to keep them interacting with as many different people of different ages as possible. I also want my adhd son to get the attention he needs because he is really smart. He just needs lots of active time to make the most of his learning time, and I‘m scared to stick him in a classroom for hours. I understand that homeschooling is a great responsibility that I would not take lightly. I can’t wait to teach my children, and I would love to be heavily involved in their education no matter where it happens.
Nevertheless, posts on this thread give me pause. Perhaps I should listen to my husband. Perhaps the conservative Christian school for all its faults is truly better than the negative effects of homeschooling.
I‘m sorry for the long post. I truly appreciate any thoughts and responses. Thank you!
