First Time OLED Buyer: Acer Predator X27U (27" QD-OLED 280Hz) vs LG UltraGear 27G640A-B (300Hz IPS) – Quality of Life/Burn-in concerns and which to keep?
Hey everyone,
I've never owned an OLED before and I'm honestly pretty paranoid about burn-in—it's the main thing holding me back.
Last week I picked up the LG UltraGear 27G640A-B (27" QHD IPS, 300Hz) for around $289. Then last night, Best Buy price-matched the Acer Predator X27U (27" WQHD QD-OLED, 280Hz, 0.03ms, FreeSync Premium Pro) down to $379 (from $429 or whatever their comp was), so I grabbed it + the 4-year Geek Squad protection plan for $79.99 (total ~$549, ends 2030), which explicitly covers burn-in. I've got about 24 days left on the LG return window, so I should have time to test the OLED side-by-side once it arrives.
My typical weekly usage:
- Gaming: 15-25 hours (mix of competitive FPS and story/single-player games)
- Videos/streaming/browsing: ~30-40 hours (YouTube, Netflix, movies, general web stuff)
- Office/productivity: 0 or very minimal (I have a separate work monitor I can switch to if I stick with OLED)
I'm already being careful: taskbar hidden, dark mode everywhere possible, super minimal/clear desktop with rotating wallpapers—no static HUDs or icons left on long-term. Open to any other tips to minimize risk (pixel shift settings, hideout modes, etc.?).
For those who've used this exact Acer Predator X27U (or similar QD-OLEDs like it):
- How's real-world burn-in risk been for mixed gaming + media use like mine?
- Any noticeable issues after months/years?
- Is the OLED "wow" factor (perfect blacks, insane contrast/HDR, colors) worth it over the LG's higher 300Hz refresh and zero burn-in worry? Or should I just return the OLED and keep the safe IPS?
Appreciate any experiences or advice—thanks!
