Is BGC Anti-Poor? And does it matter?
Just putting this here since it's been on my mind for a while and kailangan ko lang ng outlet for my thoughts. Given the recent issue with the geng geng kids na palaboylaboy sa BGC causing trouble and the response of simply kicking them out of BGC has me thinking kung anti-poor nga ba ang BGC and the conclusion I came up with is: No, BGC isn't anti-poor but neither it is pro-poor.
If anything BGC is apathetic to how much money you have so long as you don't cause trouble and I think that is true for a lot of spaces in the Philippines. Having said that however I do have issue with the response of simply kicking out the geng geng kids because it's that same apathy to poorness that is an issue that manifests in different ways dito sa Pinas.
So okay, pinalayas mo sila. My question then is... San sila pupunta? Fact of the matter is there is very few Third Places here in the Philippines where young kids can hangout without being pressured to spend money and fact of the matter is there is a lot of young kids out there na because they don't have more creative and productive outlets and institutions ay nagiging ganyan.
Asan yung mga government funded programs that would help get kids like that out of the streets? Like subsidized or free programs for the arts or sciences where children can pursue their passions without fear of not being able to pay for them? Or spaces were kids and teenagers can exist and be who they are without fear or reprimand from an adult figure. They need space to figure themselves out and there is already very little here in Manila.
Also for those saying na you guys just want a safe and secure area well don't you think they do too? But unlike you they don't have the luxury of having a security guard and strong police/traffic enforcer presence to maintain the peace in their area.
I guess what I'm trying to say is this whole "palayasin yang mga yan sa BGC" isn't helpful because at the end of the day kababayan mo rin yan. Ano? Itataboy mo na lang tapos out of sight out of mind? What's even worse is that these are young people? The people of who will and shall carry the future of this country? Tapos magagalit na lang tayo sa eleksyon kapag yung "intellectually elitist" nating kandidato hindi nanalo ee etong nga ayaw natin makipagshare space sa kapwa nating Pilipino when shit gets too real?
So maybe instead of having discussions on whether or not your gentrified neighborhood is anti-poor maybe we should have a discussion on the quality of life most young Filipinos have in this country that a lot of them are becoming delinquents and troublemakers?
Why not have discussions about the general safety in our country and why we're not collectively as a society are attempting solve it for everyone instead of letting ourselves just be sequestered in our own little enclaves?
Why not have sympathy for these young people and see them for what they truly are: the failures of this corrupt and fucked up government not giving the support and resources needed to equip these kids for a world that is hostile to them.
I think that if anything is the discussion we should be having.
