Single mum, what do I do if children want 1 to 1 time/my full attention at the same time?

Child 4-9 Years

Hello

I’m a single mum of an 8 year old and a 9 year old. On the days where I don’t have anyone else to help me, I keep on running into this problem and it breaks my heart. A random example: one child wants me to watch a whole YouTube video with them as a bonding moment and have my full attention and at the same time, the other child wants me to watch a different show with them and have my full attention. The children don’t want to share my attention with the other child and start bickering over who gets me first. Even if I say “we need to take turns so I can give you my full attention” or if I try and multitask two videos at the same time, one child will become very upset that I’m not giving them my full attention and I can tell that they feel neglected, unloved and unchosen and they completely withdraw into themselves and reject any apologies or any effort on my part when I say they have my full attention now and I would love to spend time with them. I can totally understand from their pov, this has happened several times where I have “rejected” them as I have found it difficult when both children want to spend 1 to 1 quality time with me at the same time. It’s always at the same time as well. I have suggested group activities but they really only want 1 to 1 time in that moment and other moments they are all for it. I have suggested that one child does an activity, whilst I spend 5-10 minutes with the other child and switch but they don’t want that either and they take it as I don’t want to spend time with them and I don’t love them. I realise actions/showing up is the only way, I just don’t know how to navigate this without either of them feeling neglected or feeling like the ‘second option’, if that makes sense. I would be very grateful for any advice as to how I can approach this delicately as they are very soft hearted children. I feel like there must be a magic phrase out there that will let them know that I love them even if I have to give them my full attention after the other child has had their turn and we need to take turns in that moment as there is only one of me. I have tried alternating whoever goes first or keep in mind whoever went first last time so the other child gets chosen first but it’s still not working and I have no clue what to do.

I’d appreciate any advice. Thank you so much!
