Homeland security agent showed up at old address over “overstay” (during my AOS process)what’s going on?

Today, someone claiming to be a Homeland Security/USCIS agent showed up at an old apartment I lived in 2.5 years ago. They ran into my old landlord by accident, asked about me, and said that if I didn’t report back for “overstaying a student visa” I could be arrested and deported which I never had.

Some background: I entered the U.S. on a B2 tourist visa a few years ago, have been married for 9 months, and started my green card adjustment of status from my current address two months ago. I filed two approved extensions, then overstayed for around 2 years. My field office is in Florida, and I already have a biometrics appointment scheduled.

The agents didn’t leave any paperwork, didn’t show proper ID, and didn’t contact me directly only ran into my old landlord. It seems like this might be a system/database mix-up or an FDNS review, not enforcement.

Has anyone experienced something like this agents visiting an old address or referencing an overstay that isn’t real? How should I handle this safely?

And can I continue my life as usual?
