Personally think its a cringe, bad start

STORY 70:

Mrs Luin looked out the window at her daughter facing the horizon, she turned to her husband.

“What if we stay here?” Mr Luin looked at his wife like she was crazy. His wife was quick to give reason. “Dad left this house for us, he wanted us to keep it. Not to sell it or rent it out. Luna…” She knew she needed to tread carefully, “Luna has been getting bullied and pushed to the outside of everything.” She scoffed, “We’ve tried everything! Nothing brings out her Gift, she doesn't find talented interest into anything.” She sighed and sat down, “Just admit it, we are embarrassed by our own daughter! She didn't even do anything wrong. We’ve been busy with our Gifts and jobs, barely paid attention to her and suddenly we were disappointed because she wasn't like us.” This time Mr Luin sighed, putting his hands on top of her small, but strong hands. She looked up into his dim eyes.

“I never thought that we, the high school champs who got great Gifts at young ages could have a kid that's this… late.” He chuckled in an overwhelmed way. His perfect and calm act was cracking. Mrs Luin had only once seen his strength wane. “Mare, she is 13, without a Gift! She is the victim of the school!”

“But the worst thing is that she can't control this.” They said at the same time and then looked into each other's sorrow for a few silent seconds, with only the ocean waves in the background. For the first time in years, they felt the same feeling they had in high school, real understanding of each other.

“She has never failed us. She scores well in every test, she passes everything and performs her best. She has never once asked for anything beyond her rights or been attention seeking. She has endured everything on her own silently while never complaining or fighting back.” Mrs Luin looked back out the window at her daughter dipping her toes in the salty sea. Mr Luin chimed in at the memory of Luna’s infant years.

“Linu.” He said barely above a whisper, “She is still that little girl who can stand up against anything. She is still that little fire, our Linu.” The momentary light in his eyes quickly drained away like a mosquito bite. Mrs Luin noticed his eyes shining. Tears, actual tears were forming in his wall-like eyes. His lip quivered a tiny bit and his voice cracked when he spoke. “She doesn’t…She doesn’t even know that story, she hasn’t even heard that name!” His fist pounded on the table in a way that had commanded attention and respect from powerful people. “All because of-” Suddenly the screen door rattled and Luna walked in with a smile bigger than her parents had ever seen since she was young. Mrs Luin quickly picked up a magazine and pretended to be reading it and he took a sip of his now cold coffee.

The second that she saw them, her sparkling eyes dimmed and she arched her neck down, staring at the floor while she passed. Mr Luin pretended not to watch her every dragged step, it was as if the ocean made her a whole new person. A whole new person who didn’t know rejection and pain, a girl who had always had a supportive family, a family that ate dinner with her every night, asked how her day was and attended every performance with flowers as a congratulation. Not one that hadn’t expressed their love for her since she was a fragile child with parents who didn’t understand the way she learnt how to smile on command, the times she spent in the mirror smiling over and over until she could forcively get it to reach her eyes. She taught herself the best ways to move her cheeks to create the kind of smile that said she had never seen the ugly side of life and never really would. Fake, that's what it all was, a family that showed fake care in front of cameras and had fake conversations for the sake of remaining a ‘perfect’ family.
