How to get out of a ‘bot blackhole on ID.me when filing taxes

I found the answer on Reddit to a version of this question I had been asking myself for days after being left on hold for over three hours when trying to reinstate my ID.me account, so I thought I would share my story here.

Backstory: I have an ID.me account, but it was through an email account that no longer existed and I did not have access to. When trying to file my taxes on Tuesday this week, I was prompted to verify my identity using ID.me. I followed all of the instructions online and despite every single attempt, I was unable to get through the nightmare barriers so I could file my GD taxes.

So, I did what any person left with no answers would do and turned to Reddit for real human beings’ personal experiences.

Some sweet baby angel from a post about a year ago mentioned posting a complaint on ID.me LinkedIn’s account will provide you with a human response and a virtual visit that they will initiate within literal minutes. I tried this out today, and it worked! So I’m spreading the Reddit love of navigating this situation for anyone else who may face the same barriers I did when filing your taxes this year ❤️
