Painful latch
I need some help. I can’t get in with a lactation consultant until next week and have decided to pump until I can to let my nipples heal.
Here are my two problems:
-
Painful latch
-
Baby throwing head back pulling on my nipple
Painful latch:
I’m laying the baby across my belly, my newborn is 20 3/4 inches long and doing football hold isn’t a great option for my size. My hospital lactation consultant was the one that recommended doing the across body laying due to size and weight (9lb 5oz).
I approach feeding with focus of bringing baby to me, not to baby. Having the nipple approach from bottom lip with nipple pointing towards roof of mouth. It appears nipple + some areola is in baby mouth with the lips going outward and not inward. Also, I do the hamburger hold on the boob when latching.
I approach this with both sides and the left side is the worst latch with a strong bite. My right nipple has been a soft suckle until yesterday and had two strong bite downs in a row. Now it’s really sore and needs a break.
Throwing head:
This was only a left side issue and then started doing it to the right side as well yesterday. He will be suckling and then all of a sudden pull away HARD while still latching. I saw that it could be that my fingers are on the back of the head causing that to happen as a reflux, I changed my hold and he still proceeded to do it. I’m not sure what I should do to get this to stop. Now my nipples are bruised and in pain.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
