Stanford REA admit bored second-semester senior, AMA / helping w college apps
I was accepted Stanford REA, scored a 1590 SAT, and a big part of my app was olympiad and competition stuff rather than any crazy hook. Think USABO, USACO, AIME, plus Science Bowl and Science Olympiad. No magic story. Just being intentional with time in high school and understanding how admissions actually works.
I’m a second-semester senior, so I finally have free time and I’m still in my college apps mindset. I remember what worked, what didn’t, and what people waste time stressing over.
Something I’ve noticed from helping friends is that the “game” looks totally different depending on where you live. I’ve worked with students from all over the country, including rural Louisiana and Alabama where some schools offer zero APs and have never sent a kid to a T20. A lot of those students are just as capable as anyone in a feeder school. They are just missing guidance and context. Admissions does take your environment into account, but only if you present your situation clearly and build a plan around it.
Also, getting into places like HYPSM, MIT, and Stanford is usually less about prestige and more about how you frame what you already do. Most people do not need “better ECs.” They need clearer positioning and a stronger story. Studying for the SAT, olympiads, and hard classes is also way more about systems than raw hours.
I grew up in the Bay Area, but I’ve worked with students from all over, and the same patterns repeat. The resources are out there. The real gap is knowing what matters, what does not, and how to use your time efficiently.
If you want help, I can support college apps, including overall strategy, EC framing, essays, and school lists. I can also help with SAT and competition prep systems, plus building a weekly plan that actually works without burning out. If you are stuck and you just want someone to tell you what to do next, I can help with that too.
This is for a fee, just being upfront. I try to keep it reasonable and accessible, especially for students who do not have a lot of support.
Not trying to hard-sell anything. If you have questions, comment or PM. Even if you do not want tutoring, I’m happy to answer stuff publicly so others can see it too.
