Why every sales rep keeps a "Shadow Spreadsheet" (and why it costs you)
I’ve spent the last few months talking to reps and managers about the "Commission Gap." It’s that weird space where Finance uses one spreadsheet, Sales Ops uses another, and the rep is left guessing their payout until the check actually hits.
Most of the tools that solve this are priced for Enterprise—starting at $500/mo minimums. For a small team or an individual rep, that’s just not accessible.
I’m of the mindset that commission transparency shouldn't be a luxury feature. It’s a fundamental motivator. I’ve been working on a way to bridge this gap for about 1/10th of that cost ($50 range) because the math on these enterprise tools just doesn't add up for the average user.
A few things I’ve learned while building out integrations for HubSpot, Zoho, and Salesforce:
- Accuracy > Fancy UI: Reps don't care about pretty graphs if the decimal point is in the wrong place.
- The "Shadow Spreadsheet" is real: Almost every high-performer I know still tracks their own data manually because they don't trust the automated systems.
- Forecasting is broken: Most forecasting tools are too "optimistic." You need logic that accounts for deal slippage and real-world commission tiers.
I'm currently looking for feedback on the logic engines for the CRM integrations to make sure they handle complex splits and accelerators correctly. If anyone has dealt with "commission nightmares" in these CRMs, I’d love to hear what specifically broke for you so I can make sure this build handles it.
