AITA for telling my best friend she was being selfish for wanting to cancel my 18th birthday party?
This happened in April 2022, me (17F) about to turn 18 at the time, was planning my 18 birthday celebration with around 10 people, including who i considered one of my best friends, Lauren 18F (fake name).
For context, Laura has been kinda addicted to going out and alcohol since she was 14, always sneaking into parties with a fake ID and going out days in a row, smoked cigarettes, got blacked out drunk at a very young age, etc.
Less than 24 hours before my birthday that i had been planning for weeks, my grandparents had let me use their empty beach house for the party and i already had all the decorations, food, drinks, cake, games and music to play throughout the night, etc.
Laura texted me saying the same night of my 18th birthday there was a party at a club she wanted to go to and asked me to cancel my party and go to the club with her instead, i was pissed since I already had invited everyone, they confirmed they were coming and I had spent a lot of money and time planning out everything by myself, even had the keys to the beach house and was so exited to finally stop being underage and celebrate it with my friends, she said I was exaggerating by being pissed, that it wasn’t a big deal and she was just asking me if I wanted to ask everyone invited go come to the club with us instead and i could just leave the food and drinks for another night.
I told her she was being inconsiderate and selfish, that she could go to the club any night of the year as she always did, buy my 18th birthday was only one time (in my country 18 is the age you can legally drink, drive and vote, that’s why it’s a big deal and celebration in my culture).
She got mad at me for calling her selfish and of course I wasn’t going to the club with her and leaving the party I organized behind.
I didn’t tell her but in that moment I thought her addiction with clubs and alcohol was getting out of hand I it was going to affect our friendship.
She also didn’t even consider if me and the rest of my friends invited to my birthday even liked the club or if they could even pay for the club’s entrance ticket since it was pretty expensive, was i supposed to pay for my friends tickets since it was my birthday? Was I supposed to ask everyone to pay for their own and if they couldn’t pay or didn’t want to they would just not celebrate my birthday with me?
AITA for telling my friends she was being selfish?
