AITAH for telling my boyfriend to stop buying me gifts?
My boyfriend (24M) and I (22F) moved into a rental apartment together about 3 (almost 4) months ago. We'd met through university and had been dating for a year prior to this next step. So far our relationship has been really great, we're pretty close friends as well as partners, and before moving in together we were already spending at least 2-4 nights a week sleeping over at one another's place (I would either spend the night in his house he shares with his brother, or he would come to my dorm at uni).
I'm graduating from university next semester, and managed to get a job in a city about 3 hours away from where I'm based currently. Coincidently, my boyfriend got accepted a few months ago into a master's program at a university around the same area set to start in Feb. We both talked and felt like it was a pretty natural decision to move in together given that we were both needing to be in the same area for work/uni, and that living together wouldn't really change how much we'd been seeing each other anyway. We had a look at a couple of places up for rent, but unfortunately being so central to the city meant that most places were really pricey, or right on the limit of what our budget could sustain. Eventually, we had to settle for a place that was just barely within out price range. Given that we were moving for convenience location wise to where we had to be for work/uni, all the cheaper options were still far away enough for it to be counterproductive. This place was as close to everything we needed to be near to without completely breaking the bank.
We agreed to split rent and utilities between ourselves since we both work, and initially everything seemed reasonable. I was excited to spend more time with him given we'd be living together, and it was nice to know that we'd be sharing rent between us so it wasn't just one of us having to deal with it all alone, at least that was what I'd thought.
My boyfriend has always loved getting me gifts. He delights in birthdays/christmases because he has a reason to go all out on spoiling me. I've always been extremely grateful, and I know it's his way of showing his affection. Personally, my love language is more quality time based, but I've always accepted that he enjoys acts of service/gift giving, and regardless of the material aspect, I always appreciate the thought he puts into what I would like or what reminds him of me. What he gets me can range in price, sometimes it's something inexpensive like a plush toy or food item, but other times he'll go for more expensive things like jewellery. Again, I want to be really clear, I've always appreciated his gifts and been openly thankful for them, but I've never once made it a requirement of our relationship, or asked for him to buy me things.
Here's were the problem began. Since moving in together, his love of gift giving has continued. Because he gets to come home to me after work, he's started purchasing different gifts daily so he can surprise me with something new every time he gets home, which is again, very sweet of him. However, this, on top of the Christmas period, and my birthday which was earlier in December, he's gotten me probably the most gifts ever in a 2 month period since we've started dating. Most were fairly expensive, and when it came time to do our bills for December, he asked if I was able to cover his half of the rent. I'm not rich, I've always been able to work enough to support myself however necessary, but I live modestly and have occasionally had to limit myself to just the bare financial necessities to meet ends meet. I'm in a bit of a better place now given the pay my new job will have, but I still have to track my spending carefully so that I always have enough to cover necessities like our food/rent and emergencies.
I told him I could, but I'd be dipping into emergency funds to do so, and that I really didn't like having to be made solely responsible for paying rent. I questioned him as to why he couldn't pay and he was dismissive, telling me not to worry, and that he'd be able to make it up to me next month. He's usually pretty reliable, so I decided to trust he'd not make that same mistake again, and not to press him on the issue. I felt I'd made it pretty clear that I wouldn't be able to support the whole cost of rent on my own again next time.
Last week, he came home from work with what he told me was a "surprise". He told me he was super excited, and couldn't wait to see my reaction. He'd gotten me a dyson airwrap, which, for anyone who doesn't know, is a really REALLY expensive hair styling tool. I'd never even mentioned wanting one or needing something to do my hair with (I have really really curly hair so I'm not even sure if it would work for me), but he told me his cousin had purchased one for herself and said it was one of the best hair tools she'd ever owned, which made him want to get it for me. I was slightly taken aback, he'd continued to get me smaller presents like usual after Christmas, but I'd tried to trust that he was an adult, and could spend his money appropriately in a way which wouldn't leave me needing to cover essentials on my own again.
It must have shown on my expression because he immediately asked what was wrong, and I felt I had no choice but to tell him. I explained that I was very thankful for the gift and the thought he'd put into making me happy, but that I felt this was very expensive, and I was a bit confused as to how he had all this money to spend on me when he couldn't cover his half of our apartment last month. He told me not to worry again, similarly dismissive to last time, but I told him this frequent gift giving was really concerning me. I stressed that I myself was tight on money, and wouldn't be able to cover us again if he couldn't hold up his end of our deal. He got angry and said I was an "ungrateful b***" that didn't appreciate all he did for me, and that I didn't trust him to be responsible for himself. I tried to explain that I wasn't attempting to be ungrateful, I just didn't know if he was budgeting the right way to sustain the life we'd chosen to live together. He stormed out of the room and came back in about 15 minutes later with some stuff he'd thrown together in a bag and said he was going to crash at a friends house for bit and left.
I feel awful and I don't want him to think I'm dismissive of his efforts, but I just don't feel like he's understanding his responsibilities, or respecting me need for him to help me on expenses. The house that he lived in with his brother was owned by their parents, so I'm aware this could be his first time properly living on his own, but even so, he's a grown man and should know how to be responsible for himself?? I don't know what to do, I feel really sad and worried for our relationship, but I don't like how he treated me when I confronted him, and don't know how to approach the topic of his spending again. So reddit, AITAH for asking my boyfriend to cut back on his gift giving to help me cover living expenses??
