AIO for wanting to COMPLETELY take down an Airbnb listing
Hello reddit! I am here today to share with you my horrible Airbnb experience, as well as some of the aftermath of it. It started in October of 2025 when my long LDR of 4 years came to visit. We got a really good deal on an Airbnb about a half an hour drive from my parents house, and we were looking forward to a really relaxing 2.5 weeks. When we checked in, the issues immediately began to arise. For starters, the apartment was left completely unclean. There was literal piles of dirt in the kitchen, a random hat on the table, a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, and the bed sheets were unwashed. We were informed the cleaning person’s car broke down, so we were understanding in this regard and let it go. We asked them to notify us when we were good to check back in after it was cleaned, but were left wandering around until about 7pm when we decided to check and see if it was ready ourselves. We never received confirmation telling us it was clean and ready for us to check in.
The next issue was the heat. I need to clarify this was in Michigan in October which is regularly 35F or below, dipping into mid to low 20s at night sometimes. We informed them of this, and we kept being told that it would be looked into. The next day, we left around 10am to give ample time for the repair tech. When we returned at around 7pm (estimate) it still wasn’t fixed, but we were told it was. After sending proof of the heat not working (took pics of it set to 70F, and it did not change over the course of several hours) they finally several days later scheduled a prepper HVAC technician to come out and take a look at the property. The entire time the heat was out, I borrowed a space heater from my parents house. That was our only source of heat for 7 days. After that it was finally fixed.
While this was going on, the kitchen AND bathroom sink wouldn’t drain properly. My girlfriend loves to cook, so this was a huge let down. We ended up having to buy lye to clear all of the pipes ourselves, because similarly to the HVAC situation, they had an “onsite tech that took care of it”. Of course, the fact we had to buy lye and pour it down the drain is proof enough this technician didn’t solve the issue.
After the HVAC issue was resolved, the technician made contact with us to verify that it was working. He was the only cool person there. As he was checking our HVAC after the pro came to fix it, he informed me that the host was a close friend of his and that he recently bought the property and was trying to fix it on the cheap. He also complained for about 5-10 minutes how miserably he was treated because he was expected to fix several apartments in this complex over a short amount of time, with little money to do so. He had no knowledge of electrical and HVAC equipment, but said he only knew basic housebuilding techniques. Think placing new bathroom tile/drywall that sort of thing.
Then the final straw came. We were told parking was first come first serve, so I parked anywhere I felt like. At about 11:30 at night on a Friday, when there was a banging so loud outside, the door was shaking. It was shaking to the point I felt the need to draw my concealed carry and responded to the person at the door who was swearing at us incoherently. I managed to get her to calm down enough to tell me that, and I quote “I was parked in her spot and that is so f****** disrespectful, who do I think I am etc.” I opened the door (with my gun now holstered visibly on my side) and explained that it might not be the best idea to go kicking and banging doors at 11:30 at night. After I moved my car from “her spot” I mentioned that I was normally parking in another spot but a luxury SUV with no plates had taken the spot I had normally been parking in up until this point. There wasn’t even a temp plate in the window. Keep in mind, this is 11:30 at night. When I mentioned this to the lady banging on my door, she said that she was considering calling the cops on the SUV because it had no plates, and “looked kind of sketchy.” Less than half a second later, a neighbor came barreling out of his apartment saying to “mind our own F****** business, and that it wasn’t stolen, and to let it go.”
So after literally not sleeping at all, I cancelled our remaining reservation at 7am and dropped a considerable amount of dime for a last minute hotel reservation for the 1.5 ish weeks we had left.
Of course, after we cancelled this they did a lot of damage control and tried to apologize and said “what can we do to avoid a 1 star review?” I did not care. I am not the type of person to change my review on something, just because I am offered a financial incentive. If I am unhappy with a good or service to the point that I feel like I need to leave a 1 star negative review, nothing is going to change that. Let alone the fact that I genuinely feared for my wellbeing, and would hate for someone to get hurt at this facility.
If you thought that was crazy, it gets better.
Now fast forward to nearly 3 months later, (literally yesterday) my girlfriend is getting emails from Airbnb saying that someone is claiming to be her and trying to remove the 1 star review. So, using context clues and half a brain cell, I came to the conclusion that it was one of the people on the host’s team we were in contact with when we had issues with the HVAC. This person was claiming to be my girlfriend because we hurt their feelings on a review. Let alone a review with a genuine safety concern. We are not the only people in recent times to leave poor reviews on the listening and about 3 others have reported similar experiences more recently than ours. We have been fighting this the past 2-3 days and plan to see this through to the bitter end no matter the outcome.
This has been affecting us so much. The fact they used the last 4 of her debit card, her email, phone number, and date of birth to impersonate her and throw off the Airbnb support team is unacceptable. Please give us your thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. Can anyone tell me if this could count as a form of identify fraud/impersonation? I do not have the means to pursue this legally, but I am just genuinely curious.
