Stories where a core relationship dynamic gets flipped

Looking for books where a fundamental element of how the relationship came together gets inverted or becomes less rigidly defined midway through the story. Can be a switch in power, status, or financial situation, or of the hurt/comfort equation etc.
Especially if there is an uneasy period where they struggle to adjust to these new circumstances while trying to stay together.
