What’s your warmest stitch for hats and ear warmers?

I’ve made a couple hats and ear warmers following patterns. They all used the half double crochet stitch. However, when wearing them, I don’t feel like they’re warm enough. There’s a lot of “holes” for air, even with a chunky wool. Any better suggestions for someone that’s probably considered an advanced beginner?
