68RFE with valve body upgrade?

If I wanted to run a 4th gen at ~500whp, would the 68 hold up with a valve body upgrade or do I need a fully built trans for longevity? Truck would be a daily with the occasional weekend towing trip (not super heavy, 12kish or less)
