Girlfriend (f20) and I (m19) are shocked by girlfriend’s sister (f30)’s opinion of me. How do I handle this ?
Been with my girlfriend for 3 years, moved out together 8 months ago, been living with each other happily, and loving each other. When we first moved out, I was working 50-60 hour weeks from 6 to 5 m-f every other Saturday. I essentially go home, say hello to my girlfriend, and leave to the gym for a 2-hour workout. I get back home around 7:30ish, cook, and go to bed. Busy, I know. This created a problem where I didn’t really clean, my girlfriend didn’t like that I am not a slob, just sometimes it’s the last thing I think about. She talked to me about it, told her she’s right, I need to start cleaning, and I did boom done and simple.
Fast forward two days ago, my girlfriend got mad because her friends were treating her like shit. She told her sister that she’s sick of people walking all over her, to which she responds, “From the outside, your boyfriend just walks all over you and has a lot of control over you and allows you to do nothing. You don’t even hang out with me anymore.”
My girlfriend likes wtf totally uncalled for. She tells me instantly, and even I’m like, huhhh. She responds like we respect each other’s boundaries very well, thanks for your concern. Sister fires back.
“To be honest, your boyfriend is super immature, not a partner for you at all. He just controls you, mentally drains you, he never cleans, and that’s super draining. Trust me, I’ve dealt with it before. He’s regressing, and it shows, and it’s just hard to see you lose your spark. This is coming from your big sister who knows you.”
I’m just completely shocked, so is my girlfriend. I’m not sure what I did besides not do chores for three weeks, 8 months ago, to which I do now. Even my girlfriend agrees with me. I just randomly caught all these strays. My girlfriend just wants to keep her space from her. I kept quiet for the last two days because I felt as if I said my opinion on the situation, it might alter what she actually thinks, and I don’t want to cause problems and for her to not have a relationship with her sister. But I am pretty offended and surprised by what she had to say. I would hope I seem mildly immature to her, as she’s 30 and I am just 19. I think her opinions stem from the fact that she dislikes men, and her relationship has been going south for years now. And prior to our relationship, my girlfriend would essentially go over to her house every day and hang out, which she doesn’t do anymore because she’s busy adulting, and I think it makes her upset or something.
Today, I voiced my opinion. I said I think it’s pretty manipulative. It feels like she’s trying to ruin our relationship because she’s mad you guys don’t hang out as much as you used to. I said I didn’t want her to talk to her sister about relationship advice anymore if she’s going to be so against me. My girlfriend already keeps it pretty minimal with her. I said I’d keep it friendly for dinners with her family, but I no longer have much respect for her sister. I wish my girlfriend would’ve stood up for me more, but I understand from her position she doesn’t have a lot of family to start with. The last thing she wants to do is cut ties. Looking back at my writing, manipulative doesn’t seem right. It’s just the wording she uses like big sister and from the outside, which no one sees that, our parents are certain we are going to get married and have kids one day and we both feel that way as well, we have been slowly
growing with each other and it’s been awesome we’ve never been more in love.
I guess from here, I am just curious whether or not what I said was appropriate. My girlfriend said she already felt that way prior to us talking. Is it fair to not have respect for her sister anymore? Is what she said even fair? Just so shocked both of us.
