Why do companies rarely give interview feedback after rejecting you? [CAN-BC]

Unemployment

During my job search, I did 10+ interviews with HR and company personnel. Whenever I received the “unfortunately…” email, I always replied politely asking for feedback on my candidacy. I made it clear I wasn’t questioning their decision, just genuinely looking to improve for future interviews.

Out of all of them, I only received feedback once. They told me the other candidate had more recent and more directly relevant experience, which I appreciated. What I don’t fully understand is, if that was clear on paper, why interview me in the first place? Still, at least I got an answer.

For the other 10 or so interviews, I never received any feedback at all, not even a short response.

For context, my degree is in HR and Accounting, and I interviewed for admin, HR, and accounting roles. I also did mock interviews with my university career counselor, and she genuinely liked my interview style and didn’t flag any major issues. That’s what’s making me wonder why I’m not hearing back at all.

Is this just standard practice due to legal risk, time constraints, or volume of candidates? Or does no feedback usually signal something else that interviewers avoid putting in writing?

Would love to hear from recruiters or anyone who’s been on the hiring side.
