Whitney’s Asian/Jewish background
I wonder if Max Minghella’s Asian heritage is going to come into play with Whitney’s characterization the same way his Jewish background was foregrounded in the recent episode. Industry is usually pretty intentional about how identity intersects with power, access and perception so it wouldn’t surprise me if that becomes relevant later.
We’ve mostly seen Whitney positioned as the driver in every scene he’s been in, confident, in control, moving the action forward. But in ep 3, he suddenly becomes an outlier in the room. He’s visibly othered, even explicitly called out for his Jewish last name by one of the Nazis.
It makes me wonder how that tension will connect to Harper. Whitney is portrayed as white-passing and benefits from being male in ways Harper never can but neither of them actually comes from privilege. They’re both the same kind of “world killer” ruthless, hyper-competent, willing to burn anything down to win but they’re punished and protected very differently. I’m curious how the show will draw that contrast.
I also can’t help wondering whether Whitney might eventually intersect with Eric. There’s a potential parallel there in terms of assimilation, proximity to power and what it costs to survive in these spaces. I hope we will get a brief interaction between them it could be really interesting.
