My place kept smelling dusty and I just learned I’ve been using my vacuum wrong for years

I’m genuinely curious if this is something people are just expected to know, because no one ever explained it to me. I’ve been using the same Dyson for about three years, and I always empty the canister when it fills up, so I assumed I was doing everything right.

Recently though, every time I vacuumed, the room ended up smelling worse instead of cleaner. Not strong, just this lingering dusty, old-hair kind of smell. I mentioned it in passing to my neighbor, and she casually asked when I last cleaned the vacuum’s filter.

That question completely threw me. I honestly didn’t realize filters were something you were supposed to clean at all. I opened the vacuum today and found the filter packed with thick, grey dust buildup. It was gross. And suddenly it clicked that I’ve basically been reheating and redistributing old dirt into my house every time I vacuum.

Now I just feel kind of ridiculous. Like I missed a very basic adult lesson somewhere along the way. My parents never said anything about maintaining the vacuum itself, just using it.

Is this one of those unspoken household things everyone else somehow knows? Or are there more people out there who also thought emptying the bin was the entire job?
