A recruiter contacted me to train their client's AI model; here is what I want to say to them.
I was contacted by a recruiter, who represents a client (an AI company). He is trying to find a person to fill a position at that company to train their AI model to become a better biotech researcher. Here's a little backstory of why I hate this so much. I got my PhD in biomedical sciences in March 2024. I haven't been able to find a job. The biotech industry is struggling to recover from the COVID boom, and it is adapting by focusing more on AI "innovation" so that they could replace PhD and M.S. workers with machines for a lot cheaper. Even worse, Donald Trump is trying to block the states from regulating AI so that those jobs could be protected. So receiving this invitation to apply for a position that would eventually replace me and my cohort in the future send me over the edge. I haven't sent this message yet because it might burn a bridge at some point in the future (and I want to increase my chances of finding a job,anyway). So I'm posting this here to ventilate my frustration about this stupid shit. I've had enough of it! (R*** is the person's name. I censored it just for their privacy. I'm a pissed off human, not a vindictive asshole)
Message Start: ===========================================
I'm going to be perfectly honest with you, R***. I don't find any moral good in advancing the aims of the artificial intelligence industry. It is stealing the creativity of our artists, it is displacing the jobs of our working class, and it is bankrupting our society's moral character. I haven't been able to find a job because companies, like the one owned by the sociopath you represent, prefer to rely on artificial intelligence rather than human thinkers and workers to do what has always been done by human beings for centuries. And I feel insulted that you are recruiting me to train my replacement in the future. Out of solidarity to other PhDs and master's degree holders in my field, I respectfully refuse to associate with you or your client, and I refuse to expand this artificial AI bubble any further. I would wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, as the common cliche goes, but I have too much self respect to stoop to this kind of corporate garbage.
