My 2026 goals keep failing because I’m still too available (anyone else?)
Last night I was writing my 2026 plan. Clean page. Clean goals.
Then a client pinged: “quick thing.”
I replied instantly.
One message turned into an hour.
My “new year goals” document stayed open… untouched.
And it hit me: I’m not tired from work. I’m tired from access.
Not the big stuff. The small stuff.
The “quick calls.” The “tiny tweaks.” The “urgent” messages.
A thousand small yeses that don’t look like failure… but they quietly own your day.
The hidden pattern (for me at least):
I stay available because it makes me feel valuable.
And because saying no feels like risking conflict, money, or reputation.
A tiny tool that’s been helping me break the loop:
The Availability Audit (3 questions):
- What drains me that I keep calling “normal”?
- What am I saying yes to, just to avoid guilt/conflict?
- If I keep this until June, what will it cost me?
Then I write one line:
“In 2026, I’m no longer available for ____.”
And I turn it into a rule (calendar link only, fixed revision rounds, reply windows, etc.).
If anyone wants a deeper breakdown, I’m happy to share something I wrote on this in the comments.
Curious:
- What’s your biggest “availability leak” right now?
- What boundary did you set that actually improved your business?
- How do you stay human and not become everyone’s emergency room?
