Trying to Help My Mom (F49), But It Feels Like Nothing I (F20) Do Is Good Enough
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some perspective, especially from mothers or daughters in similar situations.
I am an adult daughter living with my mother. Lately, I’ve been trying my best to step up and help with the household chores because I want to lighten her burden. However, I’ve hit a wall emotionally. Every time I do something, my efforts are dismissed or labeled as "insincere". If I ask for clarification or mention how much I’ve done, I’m told I’m being "calculating".
It’s incredibly disheartening. I’m not trying to rebel, and I certainly don't want to blame my mother—I love her and want to support her. But being constantly criticized when I’m trying to be helpful is leaving me feeling confused and drained.
As a daughter, what is the best way to continue being helpful and respectful without letting my own mental and emotional health suffer? How do you handle it when your help is met with negativity instead of appreciation? I want to keep the peace, but I also want to stop feeling like I'm constantly failing.
Thank you in advance for any advice.
TL;DR: I’m an adult daughter (F20) trying to help with chores to ease my mom's (F49) burden, but she labels my efforts as insincere or "calculating." Looking for advice on how to stay respectful and helpful without letting the negativity affect my mental health.
