I am in a pre-period cycle of hell with my boyfriend.

Rants n Raves

I am a 21 yr old female. Every week before my period, I start to feel super heavy. I’m more sensitive about everything and more prone to overthinking. I have a harder time sleeping, and therefore I am more irritable throughout the day. This typically continues on into the first couple days of my period.

My boyfriend and I have been together for 2 years. I started to notice a pattern with my pre-menstrual distress. I literally cannot stand my boyfriend, and I feel as though how I feel about him in this time period defines our entire relationship. For example, I had a couple of packages delivered to his house (I go to college nearby and don’t trust our mailroom) and I was trying to carry two of the bigger ones to my car while he was getting dressed for work. I couldn’t get his bedroom door open, and instead of gallantly rushing to my aid, he chuckled at my distress. And then when I said, “you’re just gonna laugh and not help me” he said “I’m still getting dressed!” I then went out to my car and was spiraling in my head about how I wish he would do gentlemanly things for me without me having to ask and that it was rude that he laughed at me blah blah blah. But the truth is…he usually is pretty gentlemanly. He has his moments where he’s not and I think I have a healthy amount of annoyance about it when I’m not about to have my period, but for the most part he’s very kind and thoughtful. But for whatever reason, when I’m in this part of my cycle, I somehow convince myself that he’s ALWAYS like this.

I think this creates some kind of self fulfilling prophecy as well; I feel extra irritable and sensitive, so every minor thing he does makes me see him differently, which makes me treat him differently, which makes him feel less close to me, which makes him less inclined to do those things for me off the dome. I don’t know I just had to get this off my chest and ask if anybody else experiences the same kind of thing, and ask how you cope with it.
