How can I find all my past contributions to an old Roth IRA in Fidelity?

Official Response

I have a Roth IRA with Fidelity that’s more than 5 years old, and I’m trying to figure out the total amount I’ve personally contributed over the years (not earnings).

Is there an easy way in Fidelity to see all historical contributions, or do I need to manually dig through old statements or tax forms?

Also, if Fidelity only shows transaction history for the last 5 years, is there any way on their website to access contribution records older than that—or another Fidelity source that would show them?

Finally, when it comes time to withdraw funds, does Fidelity automatically determine which portion of a withdrawal is contributions vs. earnings, or is that something I need to track and report myself?

I’m asking because I believe Roth IRA contributions can be withdrawn tax- and penalty-free in case of emergencies, and I want to make sure I understand what’s available.

If anyone’s been through this before, I’d appreciate the help. Thanks!
