Has anyone tried housing animals (particularly chickens) underground?

Given all of the issues with chickens escaping their pens and/or being eaten by predators, I was wondering if anyone has tried housing the animals underground. I'm not talking deep underground, but immediately below the ground floor of my base. Obviously I would make it well lit. Would I still get eggs? Would they all be eaten by a random rat spawn? Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!
